Within the crust and uppermost mantle of the earth, a lot of tectonic shifts take place, deforming, breaking, melting and reforming of the rocks that make up those belts. When this belt is made up of Sandstone, the heating and pressure owing to the tectonic shifts and compression produce profound physical changes in this rock. The quartz grains that are present in abundance in sandstone recrystalize with the cements previously binding the stone, and form a distinct pattern of crystals locked at very tight angles close together. During the process, the original texture of Sandstone is destroyed as all the components are redistributed through the stone. Some cementing minerals migrate through the rock and form patterns of streaks and lenses, giving the Quartzite absolutely different look from the parent rock.
The purest form of Quartzite, called Orthoquartzite, consists of rounded crystals cemented by Silica. The purity of this natural stone is accounted easily by its composition and physical appearance. It is composed of 99% Silica, and has the natural look of the parent Sedimentary rock preserved in it. The main characteristic of this stone is that because of extensive interlocking of Silica crystals, it is the strongest Quartzite, and significantly hardest to break. Orthoquartzite does not ever naturally break in between the crystals, but always around them.
